Oligny's Country Gardens has a beautiful and unique selection of trees and shrubs for 2009. We strive to bring you the newest varieties and cultivars hardy to our region. We are able to offer you a selection of sizes ranging from smaller 1 year plants to larger specimen landscape plants.

Acer

Maple Trees

We carry a beautiful selection of different maple trees. They are easy to grow and have a beautiful fall color that we've become accustomed to in the Adirondacks. Highlighted below are two of our favorites.

Red Sunset Maple

The Red Sunset Maple is a large deciduous tree with a pyramidal form. It's one of the best choices for early fall color. The glossy green leaves

turn a brilliant orange scarlet seeming to light up the landscape. This is a fast grower. Height 40'-60' Spread 40'-60'.

Crimson King Maple

This drought tolerant maple has smooth bark, straight trunk, and strong branching,providing for nice winter interest.. It is easily transplanted and adaptable to a wide range of soils including alkaline, sand, clay, and acid soils. Height 40'-50' Spread 25'-30'.

Amelanchier

Serviceberry

Amelanchiers commonly known as Serviceberry provides many seasons of interest in the landscape. It's spectacular show of flowers begin as pale pink blooms that fade to snowy white flowers in the Spring. It's young leaves are purplish in color than turn red, orange, and yellow in the fall. The fruit is sweet and edible in the summer. Height 10'-20' Spread 10'-20'.

Birch Trees

Although we tend to stay away from birch trees due to their susceptibility to disease and insects we have found these two varieties listed below to have very few problems.

Heritage River Birch

This clumping form of birch tree has leathery textured glossy dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. This variety has a salmon colored bark that peels and turns a dark red-brown with age. A fairly slow grower with maturity reaching in approximately 30 years. Prefers wet soils. Height 45'-50' Spread 30'-40'.

Weeping Birch

This graceful weeping and somewhat contorted birch is perfect as a specimen tree in the landscape.  It's a slow grower, reaching maturity in approximately 20-50 years. It has glossy diamond shaped dark green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. Requires moist soils and will not tolerate drought conditions. Height 12'-20' Spread 12'-20'.

Caryopteris

Blue Mist Spirea

Caryopteris Petit Blue

The low mounding habit of this caryopteris makes it a perfect low border shrub. Planted in masses the hundreds of true blue foot long flower spikes cover this plant in late summer. Caryopteris will grow in moist soils but prefers well drained loamy soils with neutral PH. Cut back hard in early Spring for best performance. Height 24"  Spread 24".

Caryopteris Blue Knight

This variety of caryopteris has darker blue flowers than any of the other cultivars. The silvery gray green foliage makes a nice contrast against the blooms. Great companion plant with Rudbeckia, Coreopsis, Echinacea and Miscanthus. Height 36"-60" Spread 36"-48".

Clethera

Summersweet

Clethera Hummingbird

This intensely fragrant shrub has beautiful white bottlebrush shaped flowers blooming in July. In the fall the foliage turns a bright yellow adding even more interest to this shrub. Although Cletheras like full sun they are adaptable to wet soils and shady locations. Height 18"-36" Spread 24"-36".

Clethera Ruby Spice

This variety of Clethera has vibrant pink buds that open to reddish pink flowers in July. Flowers will generally last for up to 6 weeks. You'll want to plant this shrub close to walkways and patios to enjoy the intense fragrance of this shrub. Height 4'-6' Spread 4'-5'.

Evergreens

We carry an extensive selection of evergreen trees and shrubs. They range from different varieties of pines, spruces, junipers, arborvitaes, hemlocks, and yews. Evergreens are great to use in the landscape as screenings, windbreaks and specimen plantings because of their year round seasons of interest. Below we have listed our favorites.

Vanderwolf Pine

Distinctive pyramid shaped pine with long silvery blue green needles displayed on dense branches. A superior specimen selection or accent tree. Resistant to most insects and diseases. The Vanderwolf Pine is a slow grower reaching 20'-25' tall with a spread of 10'-15' in approximately 15 years.

Japanese White Pine

This evergreen conifer has an broad open pyramidal form with bluish gray to green needles. The Japanese White Pine makes an excellent specimen planting. A slow grower reaching 20'-40' tall with a spread of 10'-20' in approximately 10 years.

   

Hydrangeas

Hydrangea "Limelight"
An exciting Hydrangea from Holland. It has unique bright lime green blooms in mid summer that holds its color into autumn when the blooms turn a rich pink. Hydrangea Limelight is breathtaking, adding much needed color to the late summer landscape. Height 6-8'.

Hydrangea macrophylla Blushing Bride

This hydrangea has pure white semi-double blooms that gradually mature to a sweet pink blush. Blushing Bride has disease and mildew resistant foliage that is a dark green providing a striking contrast to the mophead blooms.Prefers moist soil and part sun, although it can tolerate full sun in colder climates. Height 3'-5' Spread 3'-5'.

Hydrangea maculata "Endless Summer"
The only hydrangea of this type that blooms on both old and new wood and is hardy in zone 4. It produces pink blooms in alkaline soil and beautiful blue blooms in acidic soil.

Hydrangea paniculata Pinky Winky

This hydrangea will have a commanding presence in your garden Summer through Fall. The Pinky Winky ia an exceptionally cold hardy hydrangea, zones 3-7. It bears two-toned white and pink flowers that range from 12" to 16" long which emerge white and deepen to a pink as they mature. The blooms continue to grow as the season progresses and are kept upright on strong, striking red stems. Blooms start in mid-summer, earlier than most paniculatas. Best of all, it blooms reliably with rich pink color regardless of cold temperatures, soil PH, or pruning making this hydrangea a excellent addition to any garden.

A native plant with lots of potential for the home landscape. It prefers moist soils in full sun to full shade and requires little pruning or other maintenance. Little Henry has lightly scented, pure white flowers that shoot like fireworks in early summer. It has a mounded,compact habit maturing at less than 3 feet tall. The foliage changes to a brilliant multitude of oranges and reds in the Fall.

Malus

Crabapple Tree

Priariefire

A dense rounded deciduous tree with pinkish red buds that open to slightly fragrant pink red flowers. The flowers are followed by masses of small purplish red crabapples that mature in the Fall. Birds love them! The Priairefire variety has oval leaves that emerge purplish in Spring and mature to a dark green with reddish tinged leaf veins and then will turn orange in the fall. Crabapples are typically slow growers making them an ideal focal point in the landscape. Height 15'-20' Spread 15'-20'.

Malus Sargents

This variety is one the smallest in the Malus family. The Sargents Crabapple has fragrant white flowers in the Spring and bright red fruit in the Fall. It has a mounding shape but is typically wider than it is taller. Height 10'-12' Spread 12'-15'.

Ninebark


Smaller than other ninebark varieties, Summer Wine is fast growing and has few, if any, pest problems. It adds beautiful color and vibrancy to your garden, especially in the spring. In early June, when it blooms with white button-like flowers accent the leaves nicely. Pruning and other maintenance is rarely needed. Height 5' Spread 5'.

Rhododendron Maximum Rosebay

This broadleaf evergreen shrub has large white flowers tinged with pink. The leathery dark green leaves grow up to 8" long. This variety is great to use as a hedge shrub, tolerating shade to sun. Prefers moist soils and doesn't tolerate dry soils. Blooms in June attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Height 8'-13' Spread 15'-30'.

Rhododendron PJM

This rhododendron makes a great foundation planting in your landscape. It has masses of bright mauve purple flowers, blooming in early spring. The glossy dark green foliage turns purple in the fall giving this plant many seasons of interest. Height 3'-6' Spread 3'-8'.

Double Knockout Roses

These double knockout roses available in red and pink are more compact the the original knockout varieties. They are tireless rebloomers from early summer through frost. They are resistant to black spot and powdery mildew making them an excellent choice in the garden. They prefer full sun but will tolerate part sun. Height 3'-4' Spread 3'-4'.

Spirea

Spirea Pink Parasols
A cool Spirea with big pink and fluffy umbrella-like blooms that cover this mounding shrub in June. Bluish-green leaves turn a nice yellow-orange color in autumn. Height 3' Spread 2'-3'

Spira Snow Storm
This superb Spirea selection has an abundance of large white blooms in April and May.  The foliage turns a beautiful orange-red in autumn. Great to use in flower arrangements. Height 3'-4' Spread 3'-4'.

Syringa

Lilac

Lilac Charles Joly

This variety of lilac has double magenta flowers that are extremely fragrant. In the landscape it's considered a great hedge plant. Blooms early to mid May. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. As with most lilacs they make a great cut flower. Height 8'-15' Spread 6'-12'.

Lilac Krasavitsa Moskvy

The Krasavitsa Moskvy or The Beauty of Moscow is weather resistant and extremely hardy. This variety has a long bloom period and unusually fragrant large double flowers making them a great choice for cut flowers. The buds of this shrub start out pink and open to pure white creating a beautiful bicolor effect. Height 8'-10' Spread 6'-8'.

Viburnum

Viburnum Blue Muffin
Easy to grow with little maintenance required. White flowers make for a crisp contrast with the glossy green leaves in early to mid summer. The remarkably intense blue fruit appear in late summer and fall. The fruit adds interest to the fall landscape, and attracts songbirds to the garden.

Weigela

Weigela - Midnight Wine
Intoxicating, dark burgundy leaves shimmer like a fine wine! Hot rosy-pink flowers add an awesome contrast against the dark foliage. This variety produces a copious amount of flowers in the Spring and will re bloom throughout the summer. The hummingbirds love these flowers. too.
