Pest and Disease Control in your Garden
The best method of defense for controlling pests and disease in the garden is to be vigilant about scouting to catch any problems before they get out of hand. We always try to practice organic methods whenever possible. and use the safest products available. We have found the following to be the safest, most effective products for controlling pests & diseases: Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, GreenCure, Earthtone Insecticidal Soap, Earthtone Insect Control , Earthtone Slug and Snail Control For tougher insect problems we carry the following non-organic but very effective, longterm treatment of aphids, scale, grubs, borer and more; Bonide Systemic Granules, and Bonide Systemic insect Spray
Aphids are a tiny "piercing-sucking insect". They affect plants by piercing the leaf and sucking out the plant juices. Aphids tend to thrive when temperatures are warm but not too hot between 65-80 degrees. They tend to like the actively growing new growth on plants. Inspect closely to see these tiny critters of many colors, orange, green, and black mostly. In low numbers, aphids are usually not damaging. Larger populations on the other hand can cause curling, yellowing and distortion of leaves. Apply according to the directions as soon as possible one of the following: Earthtone Insecticidal Soap, Earthtone Insect Control, Bonide Systemic to keep the population in check.
Spittle Bugs: If it looks like your plants are spitting, then you most likely have spittle bugs in your garden. The problem started last fall as this is when spittle bugs lay their eggs and they overwinter until they hatch in late spring. Although spittle bugs won't kill
your plants, they are sap sucking insects that will stunt their growth and leave them more susceptible to other diseases. Spray off the spittle and the nymphs that are hiding underneath with a strong spray from the garden hose or Apply according to the directions as soon as possible either Earthtone Insecticidal Soap, Captain Jack's or Earthtone Insect Control to keep the population in check.
Slugs: Slugs can be a serious problem in any garden. They prefer to live in dark moist areas and can work quickly at night to turn a perfectly good plant into swiss cheese by morning. You usually won't see them during the day but if you look closely you will see a slimy slug trail which is a sure sign they have been around. Here are several methods you can try to keep slugs out of your garden.-
- Spread cedar bark around your plants, this will irritate and dehydrate slugs.
- Place slug traps around (shallow saucers filled with beer).
- Applying salt on slugs will disintegrate them. This method is definitely not for the faint hearted.
- Lay a wooden board in the garden. Turn the board over in the morning and pick off & discard slugs that are attached.
Black Spot & Powdery mildew are two common fungal diseases. Black Spot presents itself with, well just as it's name, black spots -especially on the upper leaf surface. Yellowing of the leaf begins surrounding the spots and the entire leaf may eventually drop off. Black Spot will cause a general weakening of the plant, resulting in fewer blooms if the disease is left unchecked. The Powdery Mildew fungus forms a whitish, grayish powder on a variety of plants. It almost never kills the plant but is more aesthetically displeasing and in more severe cases can misshapen the foliage. Environmental conditions such as excessive moisture on the leaves and cool temperatures will promote these fungal diseases. Preventative measures include: keeping your gardens free of dead plant debris, providing good air circulation around the plants, prevent drought stress by watering during dry spells, when watering always avoid wetting the foliage with overhead watering. Instead, water the soil with soaker hoses. Use GreenCure as directed both as a preventative and treatment.
